In response to the imminent shift to a self-directed waiver, The Arc of New Mexico has developed the Institute for Self-Determination. The institute is an in-depth learning opportunity for people who want to direct their own futures or assist individuals with developmental disabilities and/or their families to direct their own futures.
People successfully completing this training will be also prepared to perform the functions of the Plan Facilitator or Community Resource Guide in a self-directed program. The Institute for Self Determination consisted of 6 weekend sessions (Friday evening & Saturday) over a six-month period.
The Arc of New Mexico 2005 Institute for Self-Determination
Purpose of the Institute:
A learning opportunity for people who want to direct their own futures or assist individuals with developmental disabilities and/or their families to direct their own futures. People successfully completing this training will learn more about performing the functions of the Plan Facilitator or Community Resource Guide in a self-directed program.
Why the Institute?
New Mexico is planning a major shift in how individuals with developmental disabilities and families can utilize services through a self-directed waiver. By this time next year, there will likely be a self-directed waiver in place. In reality, this is an opportunity to change peoples’ lives so they can live in their own homes, develop relationships in their communities, make contributions and experience freedom. The promise of self-determination requires that people be prepared to engage in a different kind of process around planning and using support and services. The Institute is designed to address this need.
What does it consist of?
The following are topics that will be covered during the Institute. Those participants that successfully complete the Institute will receive a certificate to demonstrate their completion of the training.
Topics covered will include:
· Philosophy of self-determination and community inclusion
· Communication and interpersonal skills
· Person centered planning and support
· Developing an individual budget
· Building community connections, networks and relationships
· The new roles in self-directed services – plan facilitator, community resource guide, fiscal intermediary and staff who want to provide person-centered support and services
Faculty will include a number of nationally renowned experts, as well as leaders in the field of self-determination and community building in New Mexico. Faculty members confirmed for this year include Dennis Harkins, John O’Brien, Connie Lyle O’Brien, Doreen Rosimos, Darcy Smith, Tom Nerney, and Mike Green.
