UP Project Manuals

People with Intellectual Disabilities/Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD or ID/D) are at the same risk for Alzheimer’s disease as adults in the general population. Adults with Down syndrome have higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease.  They are often in their mid to late 30s or early 50s when symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease first appear, compared to the late 60s for the general population. Adults with Down syndrome experience a more rapid decline and change in cognitive abilities and behavior and the duration of the disease is shorter. Neither race, gender, nor ethnic background seems to affect the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the adult with Down syndrome.
