I am Waiting!

Deming, New Mexico

Luna County

My name is Shanmaree and I live in Deming, New Mexico.   I have been on the DD Waiver waiting list for 1 year.   I am now 2 years old.  Shanmaree was diagnosed with Down syndrome at three months in the womb.  Shanmaree is currently receiving occupational, physical and speech therapy from the program Life Quest, Early Childhood Intervention.   Shanmaree’ s parents worry that the day will come when these services expire.  They feel that all children, not only Shanmaree should continue to receive extra help, to try to achieve their goals in the future.   After the age of three, these services expire.

Shanmaree is a fast learner, thanks to programs that the Government funds like Life Quest.   They have had a big impact on Shanmaree and she is continuing to do well.  Shanmaree is smart and loveable.  She likes to dance to music and look at books.  She likes to watch the Disney Juniors channel on TV.

Shanmaree has lots of potential, yet no one can predict the future.  Shanmaree’s parents like any other parents want their daughter to have the opportunities to succeed in life. The parent’s dreams and goals for their daughter’s future are to be able to function in a normal everyday life alone and around other people, just like any other mother and father with a normal child.  The parents feel that due to their daughter’s disability she needs extra help.  Without the extra help, she may not get a fair shot at life. By writing this, the parents feel this is a start for their daughter in the path of learning and developing.

Please support funding for the Developmental Disabilities Waiver so that at a time when children are young and can learn more easily, the resources needed are available.

Support The Arc!

The Arc of New Mexico participated in the first ever Give Grande New Mexico Campaign!

The Arc of New Mexico depends on public donations to sustain our work.  You can make a one-time gift or a recurring gift.  Make a donation to support our mission to benefit all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in New Mexico.

A memorial gift is a beautiful and lasting tribute for a loved one or to a family as an expression of sympathy.  Family and friends can be recognized with a gift in their honor.  This might be for a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, holiday, wedding, retirement, etc.

Visit www.arcnm.org to make an on-line donation.  Your support is greatly appreciated!
